Angelina Jolie is Back (and Wants Another Oscar)
If you've been scrolling through Instagram and have seen a ton of images of Angelina Jolie or Jenna Ortega at some strange festival, you're not alone. So much of the news and images coming out of the Venice Film Festival have gone viral, largely because of the star power of this year's festival. It also gives us a hint of who will likely pick up Oscar nominations this year. Let's get into it.
By far, Angelina Jolie's appearance took the internet by storm. She was there promoting her new film, Maria, Pablo Larraín's highly anticipated movie about the troubled opera singer Maria Callas. Jolie openly wept as she received an 8-minute standing ovation following the film's premiere. So, if you're a betting person, smart money is on Jolie picking up an Oscar nomination for her performance.
Other standout moments from the festival thus far include Jenna Ortega's many looks promoting Tim Burton's Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which received a 4-minute standing ovation. Nicole Kidman, there to promote her new film Babygirl, showed up at the festival looking like a '60s glamour queen, complete with a top ponytail and a lowcut top. Stars to look out for in the coming days include Lady Gaga at the premiere of Joker: Folie à Deux — another big Oscar contender this year — and the premiere of Pedro Almodóvar's first English-language feature The Human Stain starring Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore.
Earlier this week, actress Sigourney Weaver, who received the festival's lifetime achievement award, teared up talking about Kamala Harris. When asked how her performances of strong woman influenced culture's acceptance of women in positions of power, Weaver replied, "We're all so excited about Kamala and, to think for one moment that my work would have anything to do with her rise, makes me very happy."
Here's what else is poppin' in the world of pop culture...
You got lots of options at the movie theater this week. John Cho's Afraid opens. (I spoke with him about it on the podcast.) Dennis Quaid portrays Ronald Reagan in Reagan. And Casey Affleck goes sci-fi with Slingshot.
Glen Powell proves once again he's one of Hollywood's most likeable stars. A tweet went viral saying a Hollywood producer compared Powell and Ryan Gosling's appeal, and that Powell's is better because he appeals to both men and women. Powell responded, "Gosling is a legend. I'm just Glen." See, now I like him more. Ugh. (But I'm also Team Gosling. Listen, I don't have to choose, I'm happy with my Powell/Gosling sandwich.)
Donald Trump had more controversies this week than so many reality shows combined. Actor/comedian/writer Jenny Yang joined me on the Parting Shot podcast to break it all down. Listen wherever you get podcasts.
That's it for me today. We'll be taking Monday off for the holiday, so I'll see you next Wednesday. Have a great holiday weekend and watch something fun this weekend!
